Passthrough latency is lower, which is the specification that most directly determines whether mixed reality feels convincing or subtly wrong.
Price
The reduction is real and larger than most expected. It is also not enough to make this a mainstream purchase. The device remains priced as premium professional hardware, competing for budget with high-end laptops rather than with game consoles or tablets.
That positioning is probably correct for where the software is. Which brings us to the actual problem.
The unsolved problem is software
The hardware criticisms of the original Vision Pro were legitimate and are now substantially addressed. The harder question was never answered: what is this for, for more than an hour at a time?
The demonstrations are consistently impressive and consistently short. Spatial video is genuinely moving the first time. A vast virtual display is genuinely useful for focused work. Immersive environments are genuinely calming. But the gap between “impressive demonstration” and “thing I reach for daily” is where every head-mounted display in history has died, and lighter hardware narrows that gap without closing it.
The most encouraging signal is not any individual app but the developer ecosystem's direction — whether tools people already use professionally gain spatial versions worth switching to. That is a slower story than a hardware launch and a more important one.
Who this is for
Existing owners: the comfort improvement is the upgrade. If you stopped wearing the original because of fatigue rather than lack of use cases, this addresses your specific complaint.
Professionals in 3D, design, and media: the strongest case. Spatial workflows have real utility here, and the price is comparable to other professional tooling.
General consumers: still early. The hardware is now good enough that the software has no excuses left, but the software has not yet made the argument.
Verdict
Apple has done the engineering work required to remove the physical objections to this category. That is a substantial achievement and it was necessary. Whether it is sufficient depends entirely on what gets built for it over the next two years.
